Formation Bio Launches $600M Fund to Accelerate Drug Development

Formation Bio has launched a $600 million Drug Development Accelerator Fund to help promising drug candidates move through clinical development and reach patients faster.

The fund will combine dedicated investment with Formation Bio’s drug development expertise, artificial intelligence (AI) technology and research capabilities. The company aims to use this approach to acquire promising drug programmes and advance them through important clinical milestones.

The announcement comes as the pharmaceutical industry faces a growing gap between drug discovery and development. Advances in AI and other technologies are helping researchers identify new drug candidates at a faster rate. However, many companies still lack the funding, experienced teams and resources needed to move all these candidates into clinical trials.

Formation Bio believes this challenge could become one of the biggest opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry. The company aims to address it by bringing together investment, scientific expertise and AI-powered development tools.

Unlike traditional biotech investment funds, which typically invest in standalone companies, Formation Bio’s new fund will focus on individual drug programmes. The company plans to invest in selected drug candidates and license them into newly established companies, known as NewCos.

Each NewCo will receive funding to advance its drug candidates through important clinical milestones. It will also gain access to Formation Bio’s drug development team, AI systems, scientific models and operational infrastructure.

The support will cover several areas of drug development, including clinical trial planning and execution, regulatory affairs, manufacturing and quality management. This structure is designed to help drug programmes progress without requiring each new company to build its own development team and infrastructure.

For biotech and pharmaceutical partners, the fund offers another way to develop promising medicines that they may not have the resources to advance independently. Under the proposed arrangement, partners may receive upfront payments while retaining the opportunity to earn additional milestone payments and royalties from future commercial sales.

The model could also benefit platform biotechnology companies. By licensing individual drug programmes to newly formed companies, these businesses may be able to advance more of their discoveries without raising additional capital or significantly diluting existing shareholders.

Formation Bio also plans to use the fund to support drug programmes targeting diseases that have historically been difficult to treat. The company will focus on areas where its AI technology, scientific models and drug development expertise could offer a meaningful advantage.

Another important part of the strategy is the growing opportunity created by upcoming patent expirations. Formation Bio estimates that more than $300 billion in drug sales could face patent expiration over the next decade. This could create opportunities for pharmaceutical companies to acquire or license promising drug candidates to strengthen their pipelines.

For investors participating in the fund, the strategy will provide exposure to individual drug assets that are already in or approaching clinical development, generally two to four years away from clinical readouts.

Formation Bio said the fund has attracted support from research foundations, academic institutions, philanthropic organisations and hospitals.

The launch marks a major step in the company’s ambition to build an AI-powered pharmaceutical business. By combining investment with drug development capabilities, Formation Bio aims to help more promising medicines move from discovery into clinical testing.

As AI continues to change how new medicines are discovered, the company’s latest initiative highlights the growing importance of funding and development infrastructure in turning scientific discoveries into potential treatments.
