Pfizer, Eisai Partner to Co-Promote Nurtec in Japan

Pfizer Japan Inc. and Eisai Co., Ltd. have announced a new collaboration to co-promote the migraine treatment Nurtec OD Tablet 75mg (rimegepant sulfate hydrate) across Japan beginning September 1, 2026.

The agreement is designed to expand awareness of the appropriate use of Nurtec among healthcare professionals and improve access to treatment information for patients living with migraine. While both companies will jointly provide medical information to healthcare institutions nationwide, Pfizer will continue to oversee the drug’s development, manufacturing, distribution, and commercialization.

Nurtec is an oral calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist approved for both the acute treatment of migraine attacks and the preventive treatment of migraine. The dual indication makes it one of the few oral therapies that can address both immediate symptom relief and long-term prevention.

Under the co-promotion arrangement, Pfizer and Eisai will combine their respective strengths to support the broader adoption of Nurtec in clinical practice. Pfizer, as the product’s marketing authorization holder, brings its expertise in developing and commercializing innovative medicines, while Eisai contributes its established presence in neurology, one of the company’s strategic therapeutic focus areas.

The companies said the collaboration is intended to accelerate the delivery of accurate and timely medical information to physicians and healthcare providers. By leveraging their combined healthcare networks, they aim to ensure that patients who may benefit from Nurtec have greater access to appropriate treatment options.

Migraine is a chronic neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide and is often accompanied by severe headaches, nausea, sensitivity to light, and sensitivity to sound. Frequent migraine attacks can significantly interfere with work, education, family responsibilities, and overall quality of life. Despite advances in treatment, many patients continue to experience inadequate symptom control or remain undiagnosed and undertreated.

With migraine placing a substantial burden on both patients and healthcare systems, the companies believe wider awareness of effective treatment options could help improve disease management and patient outcomes.

Pfizer and Eisai said the partnership reflects their shared commitment to supporting people living with migraine by promoting the appropriate use of Nurtec. Through the expanded educational and promotional efforts, the companies aim to help more patients receive timely treatment, reduce the impact of migraine attacks, and regain their everyday lives.
