Vedana Launches With $46 Million for Migraine Therapies

Vedana Therapeutics has emerged from stealth mode with $46 million in Series A financing and ambitious plans to develop next-generation therapies for migraine prevention, targeting biological pathways that extend beyond current treatment approaches.

The biotechnology company announced that the funding round was co-led by Westlake BioPartners and Canaan Partners, with additional participation from Dawn Biopharma and Alexandria Venture Investments. The financing will support the advancement of Vedana’s pipeline of internally discovered antibody therapies designed to address significant unmet needs among migraine patients.

Despite major advances in migraine treatment over the past decade, many patients continue to struggle with inadequate symptom control. The introduction of therapies targeting calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) transformed migraine care and created the first generation of treatments specifically developed for the condition. However, studies have shown that a large proportion of patients still fail to achieve optimal relief.

Vedana is aiming to address that gap by focusing on new biological targets, particularly pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP), a molecule increasingly recognized as a key contributor to migraine development. Researchers believe PACAP may offer a complementary therapeutic approach to existing CGRP-targeting medicines and could help improve outcomes for patients who continue to experience frequent attacks despite current therapies.

The company’s lead drug candidate is a next-generation anti-PACAP antibody designed for long-lasting activity and convenient self-administration through subcutaneous injection. Vedana is also developing a second program featuring a bispecific antibody that simultaneously targets both PACAP and CGRP. The company believes this dual-target approach could potentially deliver greater efficacy than therapies focused on a single pathway.

Anurag Agarwal, co-founder and chief executive officer of Vedana, said the company was created to build on the success of first-generation migraine medicines while addressing their limitations.

According to Agarwal, CGRP therapies represented a major breakthrough, but many patients continue to experience inadequate migraine control. He said Vedana’s goal is to explore biology beyond CGRP and develop treatments capable of bringing meaningful relief to a broader population of patients.

The company is led by a team with extensive experience in migraine drug development. Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer Leon Garcia previously played a key role in the discovery and development of both anti-CGRP and anti-PACAP antibody programs. Garcia said years of experience working with existing therapies helped the team identify opportunities for improvement in the next generation of treatments.

Vedana’s leadership also includes Ernesto Aycardi, who previously managed key clinical development programs for AJOVY, one of the leading migraine prevention therapies currently on the market.

Beyond its executive team, the company has assembled a group of advisors and board members widely recognized for their contributions to migraine research and drug development. These include scientists, physicians, and biotechnology executives who helped advance several of the most successful migraine medicines available today.

Investors backing the company expressed confidence in both the scientific approach and the team’s experience. Mira Chaurushiya of Westlake BioPartners described Vedana’s leadership as uniquely positioned to identify emerging patient needs as the migraine treatment landscape continues to evolve. Julie Grant of Canaan Partners highlighted the team’s deep expertise, noting that few organizations possess comparable experience across migraine biology, clinical development, and commercialization.

The launch of Vedana comes at a time when the global migraine market continues to expand, driven by growing awareness of the condition and increasing demand for more effective therapies. With its focus on PACAP biology and innovative antibody designs, Vedana hopes to establish itself at the forefront of the next wave of migraine treatment innovation.

If successful, the company’s programs could provide new options for millions of patients seeking better long-term control of one of the world’s most common and disabling neurological disorders.
