Pfizer has entered into an agreement with Edison Scientific to use artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate drug discovery and development across its biopharmaceutical research pipeline.
Under the collaboration, Edison Scientific will deploy its Edison AI Platform and Kosmos, an AI-powered scientific research system, to support Pfizer’s research and development teams. The technology will have access to Pfizer’s scientific data and research information across several therapeutic areas, including oncology, immunology and internal medicine.
The partnership aims to help Pfizer scientists make better research decisions, identify new drug opportunities and use existing scientific knowledge more effectively.
At the centre of the collaboration is Kosmos, Edison’s AI scientist. The platform is designed to analyse large amounts of scientific information, connect findings from different research programmes and identify patterns that may be difficult for researchers to recognise using traditional methods.
One of its key features is its ability to learn continuously. By combining publicly available scientific information with Pfizer’s internal research data, Kosmos will build what Edison calls integrated world models. These models are intended to help researchers understand biological processes and use lessons from previous experiments to guide future research.
The system will also help Pfizer organise its research workflows and support important decisions throughout drug development. Edison Scientific’s scientists and engineers will work directly with Pfizer research teams to adapt the technology to their specific needs.
Sam Rodriques, PhD, CEO of Edison Scientific, said Pfizer has spent decades building valuable knowledge about human biology, including what works and what does not work in drug development. He noted that the collaboration will help make better use of this accumulated knowledge, with findings from each experiment and clinical study helping inform other research programmes.
The agreement reflects the growing role of artificial intelligence in pharmaceutical research. Drug development is a lengthy and expensive process, with researchers often needing to analyse large datasets, test multiple hypotheses and understand complex biological systems before identifying promising treatments.
AI-powered platforms could help reduce some of these challenges by analysing scientific information faster, identifying potential drug targets and supporting decisions during early-stage research.
For Pfizer, the partnership provides an opportunity to combine its extensive research experience and proprietary scientific data with Edison’s AI technology. The collaboration could help researchers identify new opportunities and improve the efficiency of drug development.
Edison Scientific was spun out of the nonprofit research laboratory FutureHouse in 2025. The company develops AI agents designed to support scientific research and help pharmaceutical teams make better use of their data.
The agreement also highlights the growing interest among pharmaceutical companies in working with AI-focused biotechnology companies. As drug discovery becomes increasingly data-driven, collaborations between established drugmakers and technology companies are expected to play a larger role in developing future medicines.
Although the companies have not disclosed specific drug candidates or clinical development milestones under the agreement, the partnership aims to strengthen Pfizer’s research capabilities and accelerate the discovery of potential new treatments.
