CordenPharma Invests €80 Million in Injectable Manufacturing Expansion

CordenPharma is investing €80 million to expand its sterile injectable manufacturing capabilities at its Caponago site near Milan, Italy.

The long-term investment program includes the acquisition of a new commercial building and additional land, as well as the installation of new aseptic fill and finish lines. The expansion is designed to meet growing global demand for outsourced sterile injectable drug manufacturing.

As part of the program, CordenPharma completed the €13 million acquisition of an 11,000-square-meter commercial building and 26,000 square meters of land next to its existing manufacturing facilities on July 28, 2026. The acquisition increases the overall footprint of the Caponago site by more than 50%.

The new space will support future aseptic fill and finish manufacturing for a range of injectable therapies, including peptides, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), small molecules, biologics and oligonucleotide-based medicines.

CordenPharma said the facility could accommodate at least four aseptic fill and finish lines, four visual inspection lines and four additional packaging lines. The site may also support large-scale lyophilization, auto-injector assembly and customer-owned manufacturing equipment.

The expanded facility is expected to handle several injectable formats, including pre-filled syringes, liquid and lyophilized vials, cartridges and auto-injectors.

Alongside the new building, CordenPharma is expanding its existing manufacturing operations at Caponago. The company is adding two new aseptic fill and finish isolator lines as part of a series of investments made over the past two years.

One of the new lines will support clinical and small-scale commercial production of pre-filled syringes, vials and cartridges. A second high-speed line will focus on pre-filled syringes and cartridges and is expected to have the capacity to produce more than 500,000 units per day.

The company is also expanding its automated secondary packaging operations and doubling its analytical capacity to support a growing number of development and manufacturing projects.

The two new isolator lines are expected to be completed by mid-2027 and 2028, respectively.

Once the expansion program is fully developed, CordenPharma expects the Caponago site to reach a total capacity of up to 500 million injectable units per year. The facility is intended to support projects ranging from early-stage development to large-scale commercial manufacturing.

The investment comes as demand for sterile injectable outsourcing continues to grow across areas such as oncology, obesity, diabetes and inflammatory diseases. CordenPharma expects the expanded capabilities to support complex drug modalities, including peptide-based GLP-1 therapies, oligonucleotides, LNPs, biosimilars and other biologics.

The Caponago campus also provides access to LNP manufacturing capabilities, allowing customers to use integrated services at a single site.

Dr. Michael Quirmbach, President and CEO of CordenPharma Group, said the investment will strengthen the company’s sterile injectable manufacturing capabilities and support growing demand for complex drug products.

With the €80 million investment, CordenPharma is expanding its role in the injectable drug manufacturing market and increasing its capacity to support pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies from development through commercial production.
