Abbisko, Lilly Expand Drug Discovery Partnership

Abbisko Therapeutics has entered into a new strategic research collaboration and license agreement with Eli Lilly and Company to discover and develop innovative medicines across multiple therapeutic targets, further strengthening the partnership between the two companies.

The agreement builds on an existing collaboration established in 2022 and is aimed at accelerating the development of novel drug candidates with global commercial potential. By combining Abbisko’s expertise in early-stage drug discovery with Lilly’s extensive experience in global drug development and commercialization, the companies hope to bring new treatment options to patients more quickly.

Under the terms of the agreement, Abbisko will lead the discovery and early development of several drug programs directed at disease targets selected by Lilly. The Chinese biotechnology company will leverage its proprietary drug discovery platform, research capabilities, and development expertise to identify and advance promising therapeutic candidates during the early stages of development.

In return, Abbisko will receive an upfront payment from Lilly and will be eligible for development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments totaling up to $1.9 billion if the partnered programs achieve predefined goals. The company will also receive tiered royalties based on future annual net sales of any products that emerge from the collaboration.

The latest deal represents a significant expansion of the relationship between the two companies. In 2022, Abbisko and Lilly signed a global collaboration and exclusive licensing agreement focused on the discovery, development, and potential commercialization of a novel small-molecule therapy. The new agreement broadens that relationship by extending the collaboration to multiple drug discovery programs rather than a single asset.

For Abbisko, the partnership highlights growing international recognition of its drug discovery capabilities. The company has continued to invest in its research platform and has increasingly positioned itself as a partner for multinational pharmaceutical companies seeking innovative early-stage drug candidates. Its approach combines proprietary discovery technologies with an integrated research and development model designed to accelerate the transition of scientific discoveries into potential new medicines.

Lilly, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, has continued to expand its external innovation strategy by collaborating with biotechnology firms that possess specialized scientific expertise. Partnerships like this allow the company to access novel therapeutic approaches while complementing its own internal research pipeline.

The collaboration is expected to focus on identifying innovative therapies for multiple disease targets selected by Lilly, although the companies have not disclosed the specific therapeutic areas involved. As the research programs advance, Lilly will have the opportunity to further develop and potentially commercialize successful candidates on a global scale.

Abbisko said the agreement supports its long-term strategy of expanding its international partnership network while creating additional opportunities to translate scientific innovation into new treatments. The company believes the collaboration will not only accelerate several promising research programs but also strengthen its position as a global biotechnology innovator.

With potential milestone payments reaching $1.9 billion, the agreement ranks among Abbisko’s largest strategic collaborations and underscores the continued demand for innovative drug discovery partnerships as large pharmaceutical companies increasingly look to biotech firms to help replenish and diversify their development pipelines.
