Bayer Launches Clinical Trials Alliance With Colorado Health Partners

Bayer has formed a strategic clinical trials alliance with the University of Colorado Anschutz, UCHealth and Children’s Hospital Colorado, marking the company’s first collaboration of this kind with an academic medical center.

The alliance is intended to strengthen clinical research infrastructure, improve trial execution and expand patient access to investigational therapies. It will initially focus on several therapeutic areas, including oncology, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, neurodegenerative disorders, cell and gene therapy, women’s health and ophthalmology.

By combining Bayer’s drug development capabilities with the academic, clinical and operational expertise of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, UCHealth and Children’s Hospital Colorado, the organizations aim to accelerate the design, launch and delivery of clinical trials.

The collaboration will support new approaches to trial design and implementation, patient enrollment and research operations. It is also expected to provide Bayer with access to clinical, scientific and operational experts who can contribute to study planning, trial execution and post-approval clinical implementation.

A major component of the alliance will be expanded administrative and data science support. The organizations plan to use clinical data to help identify eligible patient populations, improve enrollment strategies and reduce the time required to initiate studies. These efforts could help investigators connect patients with investigational therapies earlier in the development process.

Christoph Koenen, Bayer’s head of clinical development and operations, said the alliance is intended to create new ways for industry and academic medicine to work together to advance clinical research.

Bayer said it is focused on developing first-in-class and best-in-class therapies, and the collaboration is expected to help the company bring experimental treatments closer to patients with serious and complex diseases.

The partnership will also support pediatric research through Children’s Hospital Colorado, which serves patients from across the region and the United States. The hospital has developed research infrastructure and expertise in investigational therapies and cell therapies for children, creating opportunities for expanded pediatric clinical trial activity.

One early example of the alliance is the selection of UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital as a Phase III clinical trial site for an investigational cellular therapy for advanced Parkinson’s disease. The study will involve neurologists and neurosurgeons at CU Anschutz with experience treating patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease and administering one-time cell-based therapies.

Additional pediatric clinical trial opportunities are being explored with physician-scientists at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Adit Ginde, senior associate dean for clinical research at the CU Anschutz School of Medicine, said the collaboration combines clinical trial expertise, patient care capabilities and health system resources with Bayer’s global drug development infrastructure.

The alliance was formally introduced at a launch event at CU Anschutz. The organizations said the effort demonstrates how closer coordination between pharmaceutical companies, academic researchers and healthcare systems can help speed clinical research and broaden access to innovative therapies.
