FDA Approves Merck Animal Health’s BRAVECTO QUANTUM Injectable for Flea and Tick Protection

Merck Animal Health, a division of Merck & Co., Inc., announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of BRAVECTO QUANTUM (fluralaner for extended-release injectable suspension)—a new once-yearly injectable treatment that protects dogs from fleas and ticks. The product is expected to be available at veterinary clinics across the U.S. by August 2025.

BRAVECTO QUANTUM, first approved in Australia and New Zealand in 2023 and later in the European Union in 2024, is now approved in over 50 countries worldwide. It is the only parasiticide that offers continuous flea and tick protection for a full year with a single dose.

“This approval sets a new standard in pet care, providing veterinarians and pet parents a safe, effective, and convenient option for year-round flea and tick protection,” said Christine Royal, DVM, vice president of Merck Animal Health’s companion animal and equine business unit.

The injectable is indicated for dogs and puppies aged six months and older. It kills adult fleas and controls infestations of several tick species—including black-legged, American dog, brown dog, and lone star ticks—for up to 12 months (8 months for lone star ticks).

Fleas and ticks pose serious health risks to pets and humans, including transmission of diseases and allergic reactions. BRAVECTO QUANTUM’s patented formulation maintains effective drug levels for a full year, helping simplify preventative care and improve compliance.

“Fleas and ticks can be active year-round, so continuous protection is crucial,” noted Frank Guerino, Ph.D., associate vice president of Global Pharmaceutical Development at Merck Animal Health. “A single dose of BRAVECTO QUANTUM offers 12 months of protection, making life easier for pet owners and vets alike.”

BRAVECTO QUANTUM has received recognition for innovation, winning the 2024 Edison Award and the 2024 S&P Global Award for Best New Companion Animal Product, underscoring Merck Animal Health’s commitment to advancing pet health.
