Merck and Siemens Extend Strategic Partnership to Drive Digital Transformation in Life Sciences
Merck and Siemens have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their strategic partnership aimed at accelerating digital transformation across the life science industry by integrating digital and physical products. The agreement centers on delivering integrated software solutions, systems, and consumables that leverage automation, data, and artificial intelligence (AI) to seamlessly connect drug discovery, development, and manufacturing processes.
This marks the first joint use of technology acquired by Siemens through its recent purchase of Dotmatics, completed in July 2025. Jean-Charles Wirth, CEO of Merck Life Science, highlighted the collaboration’s potential to help scientists move more swiftly from laboratory concepts to therapies for patients. He emphasized that by combining the companies’ strengths, they aim to revolutionize the pace of scientific advancement.
Cedrik Neike, CEO of Siemens Digital Industries, echoed this vision, noting the escalating costs of drug development and the critical role digitalization, data, and AI play in overcoming these challenges. He explained that their collaboration focuses on creating a digital backbone that connects every stage of drug development, allowing data to flow seamlessly, insights to emerge faster, and ultimately, life-saving medications to reach patients sooner.
The partnership will prioritize digital-first solutions to close workflow gaps in drug discovery and biomanufacturing by integrating Merck’s software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings with Siemens’ digital ecosystem. Early pilot projects include incorporating Merck’s AI tools and digital applications into Luma, Siemens’ Scientific Intelligence Platform acquired via Dotmatics. This integration aims to provide scientists with a unified environment that links product ordering directly to digital tools and data insights, enabling faster, data-driven decision-making.
Looking ahead, Merck and Siemens plan to expand joint projects and deepen integration by co-developing smarter data management tools and user-friendly interfaces that simplify complex processes for scientists. The partnership is also exploring the creation of digital marketplaces to offer customers streamlined access to complementary technologies and services.
Both companies view digital innovation as essential to the future of life sciences, and this renewed partnership aims to set a new standard for digital transformation, equipping scientists and manufacturers with advanced tools to accelerate breakthroughs. This MoU builds on previous agreements between Merck and Siemens in smart manufacturing, reinforcing their shared commitment to driving industry-wide innovation.
